Shopping in the Caribbean
Shopping in the Caribbean is a real treat. Pretty much everything is approximately 25% – 30% off the price of what you pay in the United States, and the fact that you are either buying for your attendants, yourself or as gifts, the shopkeepers will be delighted to work with your budget.
Of course, being one that has a fondness for all that glitters, I am happy to take you on this written excursion.
Do save your money and buy in the Caribbean. You get all the latest styles and brands at a very good discount and no sales tax! Shopping is a popular sport among visitors and watches are always at the top of the list. This makes a great honeymoon or attendant gift.
The array of designs and number of shops displaying every version and at every price level is phenomenal. Every Caribbean Island offers this ‘feast’ but some take it to another level.
Rings, bracelets, necklace, gold, diamonds, colored stones, silver: a veritable feast to the eyes and easy on the pocketbook
Downtown St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands is a buyer’s dream. You name, you think it, you can find it there, and all at fabulous prices. The same goes for St. Croix (USVI) Jamaica, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Aruba to name a few.
From crystal, dishes to tablecloths, the prices are so much better than stateside. And they will pack and ship for you! Again no sales tax!!
Great buys on local crafts and make sure you stock up on these for the trip home. There are some Caribbean destinations where the local art is truly awesome and the carvings are fabulous. Great to give as gifts when you get back home! Have a local artist paint a portrait of you and your new spouse, or have something carved that will remind you of this special event.
The Caribbean is famous for its array of leather goods, handbags, evening bags, suitcases, valises. You think it, you can find it. Some destinations have outlets of the major US name brands, all at a fraction of the cost. My favorite for leather shopping is Puerto Rico. I head to the outlets in San Juan and I am in heaven.
You can also find quite a few of the name brand clothes at outlet prices without the tax.
Shopping at the Hotel
All hotels have gift shops where you can buy an array of products with their branding. In addition, some hotels do allow local vendors to bring their wares and set up a local display. Usually this is at the end of the day when you have finished dinner.
If you are a cheese lover, do not forget to stock up when visiting Aruba. That Dutch cheese is done the European way. Do not assume that the Gouda bought in Aruba is the same as in the United States. The ingredient in the European product is much creamier.
This is just a short version of Caribbean shopping. I am partial to some stores and so let me know what destination you will be traveling to and I will send you to my favorites. And why are they my favorites; well the return policy is good and the product is quality, not to mention the prices.
Treat yourself well. There is nothing like a day of shopping to end the day with a fabulous spa treatment or sipping daiquiris at the local outdoor café.
