Things To Do in Trinidad & Tobago

Adventure: is right under your feet on this majestic island.  Choose from any of the following  and return home with many stories to tell.
Hiking: There are a wide range of hiking trails, with hikes varying in difficulty. Covered by rain forest, the island’s Northern Mountain Range is a favorite with hikers for its variety of trails, waterfalls, rivers, streams and limestone caves, but the wetlands of Central Trinidad and wildlife rich southern mountain range, are also great for exploring.
Tobago also offers a wide range of hiking trail for all levels of difficulty. A relaxing walk through the Hemisphere’s oldest rainforest is an easy and gratifying hike. For the ambitious a challenging six hour trek through abandoned cocoa estates and woodland to a mountain lake.
Biking: Trinidad’s network of old oilfield roads and hiking paths provide a range of surfaces and environments for cycling. If you have a preference for a paved surface, almost every area of Trinidad has country roads with reduced vehicle traffic. The cross-country rider will be able to find undulating paths with amazing views. The mountain biker will find the trail less traveled requiring navigation skills and dexterity.
Tobago has everything a mountain biker of any level can want and bicycles are widely available for rental. The southwestern side of the island provides a smooth ride with flat land and gentle hills. The northeastern end of the island provides stunning trails with steep mountains.
Visit Tobago Cave Exploration: Trinidad has several fascinating cave systems. In the Northern Mountain Range lies the Aripo Caves. In Central Trinidad, the Tamana Caves and the Cumaca Caves. Off the western peninsula, on the island of Gaspar Grande, a network of underground caverns called the Gasparee Caves provide a wealth of geological formations including stalactites, flow Stones and fringe curtain.
Animal Watching: Tobago has several great sites for bird watching, including a former cocoa estate converted into a bird sanctuary. Bird watchers will also enjoy Little Tobago, once home to Birds of Paradise. Trinidad is a paradise for lovers of diverse bird life. More than 430 bird species, from the Speckled Tanager to the Scarlet Ibis which can be spotted on the island.
Water Sports: Both island have so much to offer with their crystal clear waters, these are just a few of the many ways one or shall I say two can enjoy a good splash.
Kayaking: Trinidad provides ideal conditions for those who do not want to contend with large waves, ocean swells and unpredictable sea currents. Chaguaramas, on the western peninsula and Godineau River in south Trinidad are the premier spots to launch from.
There is only a gentle swell in the waters of Tobago. It is protected by the Buccoo Reef, the azure waters of Tobago’s Buccoo Bay and Bon Accord Lagoon making it perfect for kayakers. The fringing mangrove swamps of the Bon Accord Lagoon provide a lovely contrast to the white sand beaches along Pigeon Point at the centre of Buccoo Bay.
Snorkeling & Scuba Diving: The waters around Tobago support about 300 different species of coral, including staghorn, elkhorn, fire coral, giant tube sponges and starlet coral. There is also a broad range of reefs, rock pillars, wrecks and extravagant undersea gardens filled with giant sea fans, whips and plumes. Popular sites exist off Speyside, Little Tobago and Goat Island where you can drift dive along reefs with sponges the size of bathtubs and bushes of black coral. On the southeast coast are the crystal clear Nylon Pool and Buccoo Reef National Park.
During the months of March to July, Manta Reef is the place to see giant rays, although divers also encounter dolphins, marine turtles and sharks.
Fishing: There are seasons to the fishing in Trinidad. Sailfish season is from November to April. Kingfish, African pompano and Spanish Mackerel abundant between June and September. Dolphin and wahoo action peak from October to May and other species – such as tarpon, tuna and shark – are plentiful year round.
Tobago is a dream come true for sport anglers with game fish, including blue marlin, white marlin, swordfish, wahoo, tuna, barracuda, dolphin (mahi-mahi) and shark. Fishing is good all year round in Tobago but the main offshore fishing season is October to June. The biggest months for marlin are February, March and April, when Tobago hosts the International Game Fishing Tournament.
Equipment rentals, charter boats and customized fishing trips are always being offered
Yachting: Trinidad and Tobago is made for the yachtman/ woman. Located south of the hurricane belt, Trinidad features high quality workmanship, a ready availability of super grade teak, a relatively low cost of labor and excellent support services. With marinas, boatyards, support services and contractors all conveniently in one location – Chaguaramas Bay – you can be sure you will find somewhere to anchor.
Shopping: Shopping is everywhere in Trinidad, from main streets housing small variety shops and family-run businesses to multi-level shopping malls. Roadside and street vending is also very common. Almost anything, from seasonal fruit and vegetables to mad bulls, is available from a tray on the pavement or the back of a pick-up truck! Duty-free shopping is also available at West Mall in Westmoorings, Long Circular Mall in St James, Excellent City Stores in Port of Spain, Maraj and Sons, Frederick Street, Port of Spain and Stechers, Long Circular Mall, St James.
Golf & Other Sports: Tobago has two championship 18 hole golf courses. Both with impressive views and scenery and equally challenging

  • The Mount Irvine Golf Course
  • The Tobago Plantations Golf Course

Both clubs rent out equipment and have professional coaches for both beginners and experienced players.
Trinidad is home to six golf courses.

Cuisine of Trinidad & Tobago

Cuisine as you would expect covers the full spectrum of international fare.  However local fare is quite good.  Do not pass up the road side vendors.  Be sure to try the rotis & Shark ‘n’ bake at Maracas Beach.

Try to be around for the amazing food festivals. A must visit is the annual Taste T&T, where the top local restaurants and purveyors of traditional foods come together for two nights. Two other popular food festivals include the fundraisers Chefs Royal and Dining with the Saints.
